The “wyvern” is a two legged dragon like creature, with two wings. This particular model has an interesting background story.

I had only recently received my 3D printer, and was looking for information on how to create my own designs. I ran across a very informative YouTube channel – TinkerCadWorld. TinkerCAD is a popular free, browser-based, and (most importantly to me as a newbie) relatively easy to use CAD (Computer Aided Design) website. The owner of TinkerCadWorld provides fun, informative tutorials on using TinkerCAD.

One of the videos he created really caught my attention. He created a video showing him creating a “dragon” (it’s actually a wyvern, but he called it a dragon) protecting her nest of eggs. It looked great!, and for those that joined his channel as a member, he provided the source files so members can print them out themselves. I eagerly signed up, and downloaded the files to print the dragon and the eggs (two separate files).

I was new to 3D printing (I’d only had the printer for about a month at this time. I was a little shocked when the system told me it was going to take 27 hours to print. I paused a bit, then thought “I really like this”, and submitted the print.

27 hours later, plus about 8 more to print the eggs, and I had this beauty. I had a few problems fitting the eggs in, so I posted a note on the YouTube channel. The designer posted back that he was surprised that I “dared” to print it. He had printed it twice before he got a good copy, and decided he’d never try again. He really only put this out there as a training video. He didn’t expect anyone to really try to print it, due to the complexity.

I didn’t care, in my ignorance as a newbie, I plowed ahead and somehow succeeded. He said as far as he knew, he and I were the only two to ever print it. When I decided to create this website, I knew it was going to be my “showpiece” for the site.

It’s got a ridiculously high price tag, because I’m not overly anxious to sell it. If someone really wants to buy it, I’ll package it up carefully, send it off with my best wishes, and then print another to keep around the house. Then the buyer will (likely) have one of three in existence.

A Note on the Catchphrases

I really liked the fierce attitude of the wyvern, and told my wife that “Mama bear ain’t got nothing on the wyvern”. I liked that, and decided to use it as a catchphrase for the model. However; even though she’s technically a wyvern, most people don’t know what that is (it’s a dragon-like creature with only two legs, and two wings instead of arms), so I decided to just use “dragon” in the cachphrase. You’ll probably see it around here from time to time.
